Golf Balls - What Every Golfer Should Know about Golf Balls

In the good old days, things were simple. The choice of golf balls was also simple. The high-level professionals normally used a three piece golf ball. This had a high spin and was covered with balata. The every day run of the mill golfer would use the two piece golf ball which was rock solid and was covered with surlyn.

Today there is a wide variation of golf balls. For the beginner, he may be so overwhelmed that the choice may not be an easy one. Lets simplify matters a little and take a closer look at some details of the varieties of todays golf balls.

The simplest way to look at the many varieties of golf balls that are available today is to look at it from two sides. On the one side you have the kind of golf balls that the pros use. They are soft, high spin, three-piece and very expensive. On the other side, you have the type of ball that the amateur and beginner golfer uses. These balls are low spin, two-piece and inexpensive.

Then you have the golf balls that are somewhere in the middle of the road. There are all kinds of multipurpose golf balls that will provide plenty of distance when hit from the tee, yet these balls give enough control to the player.

Making the Right Choice

This is mainly all you need to know to make your choice of a golf ball that will suit your needs. If you are just a beginner at this sport, then you will want to choose the two-piece, low spin golf ball. Because you have less control, potentially bad shots will be alleviated and penalties will be reduced.

As your golfing skills improve, you can begin to move towards the middle of the road multipurpose golf balls. These balls will begin to give you a little more control over the flight of the golf ball. As time progresses, you will attain the skill level where you will actually be able to steer the golf ball in different directions in order to make more successful shots.

Good golfers what as much control as they can possibly have so that they are able to steer the ball to the left or to the right, depending upon the intended direction. Beginners have only to be concerned about driving the ball as far as they can in a straight direction.

There are also two more last minute tips:

1. Make sure your golf ball is kept warm. A golf ball will suffer the loss of distance if it is too cold. If you happen to be playing on a cold day, put a few golf balls inside of your coat pocket and handle them every once in a while to keep them warm. You will then be able to alternate balls at each new tee so that you will be assured that you always start with a warm ball.

2. Nothing lasts forever - even golf balls. Golf balls DO have a shelf life. After about one year, you will tend to lose distance with the same ball. The best thing to do is to keep track of how long you have had your golf balls so that you can avoid using stale ones. Remember that three-piece golf balls tend to lose their quality quicker than two-piece golf balls.

This is essentially everything you need to know about golf balls. You have been acquainted with the different types and have found tips about getting the best ball for you.
