Reasons Why You Hook the Ball & Remedies to Stop It

The most common flaw that beginner golfers have is usually slicing the ball. However, the second biggest mistake that is made is commonly known as the hook. It is just the opposite of the slice, but yet it is equally frustrating.

When you hit the golf ball with a low tee shot, you will usually hook the ball. That means that it will go straight for a time, but suddenly it will make a sharp turn to the left and get buried in the woods. Better yet, it may get sunk in a water hole or it may land in the rough.

The Problem Is Simple

If a golfer is prone to make a hook shot, he often has the clubface closed in relation to his swing path. This will cause the ball to sidespin counterclockwise and hook to the left. This is how it happens to right-handed golfers.

It is not hard to figure out why this happens. It is merely a matter of common physics. The clubface is closing in too soon and, as a result, it points to the left of the target when impact occurs.

Check Your Body

The reason you are hooking the ball is that you are swinging far too much with your hands and arms and are not using enough body movement when makig your shot.

The reason why your ball hooks to the left is because the club head gets warped into a closed position from your upper body movement and the hips do not open up completely. The habit of closing your hips and having too much force from your arms and hands will undoubtedly almost always result in a hook shot.

You may also have a problem when you grip the club. Many times, golf players who hook their ball tend to use too strong of a grip. The clubface usually ends up being closed when impact occurs. This happens because there are more than three or so knuckles showing on the left hand at address. Try to lighten up on your grip and so maneuver your hands that only two knuckles are showing. This can help a great deal and can sometimes cure the hook shot immediately.

In conclusion, you have found out what a hook shot is, what causes such a shot and what remedies you can take to overcome the problem.
