They are Only Useful When You Mean to do Them

If you are hooking the ball continuously and unintentionally then you are most likely having a hip problem. There are two main possibilities that could be occurring to make you have a hook shot. First you are blocked because you have not rotated your hips properly. Make sure that when you are at impact that your belly button is pointed at your target. The other problem is your weight is still on your back foot; make sure your weight shift is being done correctly, otherwise you will continue to have the results of a bad hook shot.

If you have worked on that part of your swing and you still have a hook trying looking at your arms. What is the driving force of your swing; if it is your arms, you have a bad swing situation. Your arms should work only to the response of your bigger muscle movements. In other words your arms should be just along for the ride and not dictate your body's movements.

Tape Your Swing

Using video to analyze your swing is a great way to both fix errors in it, and to learn what you are doing right. Have a friend tape your swing from behind you, in front of you and on both sides, this way you can see your swing from every angle. Your Stance

Check your stance when you are addressing the ball. Many golfers have a bad habit of having a closed stance at address. When you swing with a closed stance your ball has no choice but to hook, so make sure that you are square at address, you may need to have someone stand behind you a few times because if you have done this for a while, standing square will not seem right to your eye.

Check Your Grip

The last thing that you can check on your own is your grip. You may need to change your grip to what is referred to as a "weak grip." This means that you should turn your grip ever so slightly so that you have less knuckles showing. This will help you because it will keep your club face open for just that extra second allowing the face to be square at impact and eliminating the hook shot.

Take a Lesson

If you are unable to correct your hook shot quickly go and have a professional look at your swing. They are trained to pick up even the slightest errors in your swing. The worst thing you can do is let this quirk in your swing become a habit, bad swing habits are very hard to "unlearn."

A hook shot is only helpful when you intend for your ball to hook, otherwise they are just shot killers and you need to get the kink in your swing worked out. If you are unable to do it yourself, get a lesson from a pro.
