Dispite all the thousands of golf accessories, do-dads and what-not that you can purchase for your game or just for your pleasure, many are completely unnecessary. However there are some that are absolutely vital for your game. Case in point: the golf ball. Try playing without one.

Humor aside, it should be noted, however, that there are dozens of manufacturers producing hundreds of types of golf balls. For beginners, the fact that here are this many types of golf balls is more than a little surprising. A standard golf ball is 1.62 inches in diameter and can have a maximum weith of 1.68 ounces.

Professional games place one additional requirement on a golf ball: it must be approve by the United States Golf Association (ISGA). But unless you are playing a professional game or tournament, you can you any ball that you want on the field.

However in professional competition, the rules are very strict on this one requirement. In fact, if a player if found to be using an ball that is not approved by the USGA, he or she will be immediately disqualified from the competition, no exceptions. But to be fair, it should be noted that most balls sold by the major manufacturers at sport supply stores are USGA approved.

Tees and Divot-Repair Tool

In addition to the golf ball (an your clubs, of course), there ar two other items that will always be a part of you game: a bag of tees and the divot repair tool.

The Tee

The tee is just a wooden peg that stuck into the ground, with its top surface flat so that a golf ball can be placed on it securely so that it is slightly elevated above the ground. On the very first shot of each hole, you are allowed to place the golf ball on top of a "tee". This tee is simply a wooden peg that is elevated once it is stuck in the ground. The top surface of the tee is flat so that the golf ball is placed securely on it, ready for a clean swing. Tees are very cheap and come in packages of twenty or thirty, for just a few dollars.

Divot-Repair Tool

A divot-repair tool is a device that will help you repair any dents created in the green. The green is a very tidy and well maintained area where the whole is located at. And many swings will chop a small section of it away, which should be replaced by the player using a divot tool.
